Pattern percentage
For a large regular perforated region with no blank-area adjustment, use the perforated metal open area calculator.
Engineering tool · Finished perforated sheets
Estimate opening area after blank margins and additional blocked zones. Reverse the same model to find centre pitch or hole size for a target whole-sheet open percentage.
Geometric estimate: uses a continuous repeating pattern within a rectangular perforated region. It does not count complete holes or certify a manufacturing layout.
Three calculations using one set of finished-sheet dimensions.
Local pattern and whole-sheet percentages are separate.
Anet = (L − left − right)(W − top − bottom) − Ablocked
fpattern = k(d/p)²; Aopen ≈ Anetfpattern
fsheet = Aopen/(LW); k = π/(2√3), π/4 or 1.
Reverse: p = d√(k/fpattern); d = p√(fpattern/k).
For a large regular perforated region with no blank-area adjustment, use the perforated metal open area calculator.
Use the sheet hole count calculator for complete round holes and centre-based margins.
For unperforated ends and a longitudinal weld strip, use the perforated tube calculator.
A 1,000 × 500 mm sheet with four 20 mm blank margins has a 960 × 460 mm patterned rectangle. For 5 mm round holes at 8 mm pitch on 60° staggered centres, the local pattern is 35.42576883% open, the estimated openings are 0.1564401952 m² and the whole-sheet open area is 31.28803903%.
These values use exact geometric constants internally. Reverse modes produce theoretical dimensions; rounding to available tooling changes the open percentage.
No. Enter the actual unperforated boundary width, measured from the finished sheet edge to the boundary of the perforated region. Centre margins used for whole-hole counting have a different meaning.
No. This is a continuous pattern-area estimate. Partial cells, individual hole placement, edge clipping and irregular cutouts require an approved layout or an exact hole count. For complete round holes, actual opening area equals hole count multiplied by πd²/4.
Enter the unique area of solid islands, fixing zones or covers inside the perforated rectangle. Exclude the four outer margins and do not double-count overlaps. Every included region is assumed to have the same underlying repeating pattern.
It refers to the entire finished sheet, including blank margins. The tool first converts this target to the required local pattern open fraction, then solves either pitch from hole size or hole size from pitch.
The result is a theoretical dimension. Available tooling, material, thickness, minimum ligament, flatness and tolerances need manufacturing review. A positive ligament alone does not establish manufacturability.
No. It is a geometric projected opening fraction. Filtration performance, strength and pressure drop require separate data and models.
Direct Metals: round and square pattern formulas · NIST: unit conversion factors. This calculator uses full π-based constants rather than rounded percentage coefficients.
Explore perforated sheets and share your finished dimensions, pattern, blank zones and drawing for manufacturing review.
Discuss your specificationsFor flat rectangular sheets with one uniform pattern. Excludes arbitrary shapes, multiple patterns, slotted holes, detailed hole counts and overlapping blockage estimates. Results do not establish strength, filtration performance or guaranteed pressure drop.
