Wire Mesh Roll Length & Cutting Calculator

Calculate gross roll area, required length from area, and rectangular cut-piece quantities with explicit trims and inter-piece spacing.

Regular rectangular roll geometry only. Cutting layouts A and B are alternatives, not quantities to add together. No optimal nesting or production yield is guaranteed.

Calculation basis

A = W × L; required L = A/W.

Usable width U = W − 2e; usable length T = L − 2t. Across count = floor((U + g)/(piece width + g)); along count = floor((T + g)/(piece length + g)). Layout B swaps the piece dimensions.

Worked example and related tools

A 1 m × 30 m roll has 30 m² gross area. With 0.2 m × 0.3 m pieces and no trim or gap, A gives 5 × 100 = 500 pieces; B gives 3 × 150 = 450 pieces. They are two alternative layouts.

Use the wire mesh weight calculator to estimate net mass, or review stainless steel wire mesh rolls and cut sheets. Area alone does not establish filtration performance.

Frequently asked questions

How is wire mesh roll area calculated?

Gross area is roll width multiplied by roll length. It excludes no defects or edge waste. Use the cut mode to account for specified side trims, end trims and spacing.

Can I calculate roll length from an area requirement?

Yes. Divide the required gross area by the entered width. This is an area balance and does not guarantee enough length for a particular cutting layout.

How are edge trims and cut gaps applied?

The side trim is removed from each width edge and the end trim from each length end. One gap is reserved between neighbouring pieces, with no extra gap outside the first or last piece. Include any outer cutting allowance in the trims.

What do layout A and layout B mean?

A places the entered piece width across the roll; B rotates every piece by 90 degrees. Each is a regular grid. Only use rotation if warp/weft direction, coating and manufacturing requirements permit it.

Does the calculator find an optimal nesting layout?

No. It compares two uniform grid orientations. Mixed orientations, irregular pieces, defects, machine clearances and continuous-production constraints require a separate cutting plan.

Can unallocated area always be reused?

No. Unallocated area includes edge trims, end trims, gaps and residual regions; some may be unusable scrap. The percentage uses gross roll area, not usable area after trims.

Units and verification

Internally calculated in metres and kilograms using geometry and mass balance. NIST unit conversion factors. Confirm actual dimensions, net mass and production conditions before purchasing.
