Measured Filter Holding Capacity Calculator
Scale a measured contaminant holding capacity by effective media area, or calculate the area needed for a target retained mass.
Use a validated comparable reference test. Media structure, thickness, contaminant, fluid, temperature, face velocity and terminal differential pressure must be comparable. Scaling is a planning assumption and needs validation; it does not predict filter service life.
Measured-data scaling result
- Estimated retained mass
- Effective media area
- Reference capacity per area
- Target / reference area ratio
This is a linear scaling estimate, not a verified target-element performance rating.
Formula and use
Specific capacity = measured retained mass ÷ reference area. Estimated mass = specific capacity × target area. Required area = target mass ÷ specific capacity.
For pleated elements use exposed effective developed media area; exclude sealed ends and unusable bonded regions consistently. Do not transfer reference values between sintered felt, woven mesh and sintered mesh merely because nominal filtration ratings match.
Frequently asked questions
Can I calculate capacity from porosity or micron rating?
No. Enter measured retained mass from an appropriate reference test. This tool has no built-in product performance values.
Does this predict replacement or cleaning intervals?
No. Contaminant changes, fouling, flow distribution and terminal pressure conditions require application-specific assessment and testing.
Must the target use the same flow rate?
Compare at the same face velocity. If area changes, matching face velocity generally requires proportional flow changes. The calculator does not check hydraulic equivalence.
Is injected contaminant mass the retained mass?
No. Use the reported retained capacity or a validated contaminant mass balance appropriate to the test method.
Does ISO 16889 apply to every filter?
No. ISO 16889 describes multi-pass tests for hydraulic fluid power filter elements within its stated scope. It is not a universal test method for gas filters or all industrial media.
What happens when I change units?
Existing numeric entries are converted. Recalculate to display results in the selected units.
