Filter Area Calculator: Cylinder & Pleated Cartridge

Calculate cylindrical surface area or estimate pleated filter media area from cartridge dimensions, pleat count and effective filter length.

Quick definition: a plain cylinder uses exact geometric area; a pleated cartridge uses a theoretical media-area approximation and must be confirmed against the actual pleat profile and finished element.

Enter filter dimensions

Choose the calculation that matches the element construction.

Enter 0 to omit the estimated cartridge quantity.

Formula used

Lateral area = π × diameter × length

How to use the filter area calculator

Match the structure

Use Cylinder area for screens or sleeves; use Pleated cartridge only when media folds radially between outer and inner diameters.

Use effective length

Exclude end-cap bonding zones, gasket coverage and blocked sections from the active pleated length.

Verify the finished element

Confirm theoretical area with the actual pleat profile, spacing, seam allowance and approved manufacturing drawing.

Formula and engineering limits

Plain cylinder: lateral area equals πDL. Adding two circular ends gives πDL + πD²/2, but filter sleeves and open-ended elements normally use only lateral active area.

Pleated cartridge: approximate media area equals 2 × pleat depth × pleat count × effective length, where pleat depth is estimated as (OD − ID)/2.

The pleated formula treats each pleat side as a flat rectangle. It does not add curved fold radii, overlap, seam allowance, adhesive penetration or media blocked by end caps.

More theoretical media area does not automatically mean more usable flow. Tight pleat spacing can cause contact, poor cleaning and uneven flow distribution.

Frequently asked questions

What is the surface area of a cylinder?

The lateral surface area is π multiplied by diameter and length. Total geometric area adds the two circular ends.

Should filter end caps be included in filtration area?

Usually no. Bonded or solid end caps do not pass fluid, so active filter area normally includes only exposed media.

How is pleated filter media area estimated?

A practical preliminary estimate is two pleat faces multiplied by pleat depth, pleat count and effective filter length.

Why can actual pleated area differ?

Fold radius, media thickness, seam overlap, end-cap embedment, tapered pleats and spacing change the real developed area.

Can filter area determine flow rate?

Not by itself. Flow also depends on media permeability, pore structure, viscosity, pressure drop, contamination loading and support layers.

How is the required number of cartridges calculated?

The calculator divides the optional target area by estimated area per element and rounds the result upward. Hydraulic and housing checks are still required.
