Sintered Mesh Filter Pressure Drop Calculator

Estimate clean sintered wire mesh media pressure drop from measured permeability, or scale a reference measurement for the same filter element in the linear Darcy flow range.

For steady, single-phase Newtonian liquids in a confirmed Darcy flow range. Gas, slurry, fouled media and significant inertial resistance require other models or test data. This tool does not establish allowable differential pressure or a replacement threshold.

Use permeability for the complete clean laminate in the flow direction. Use active gross media area, excluding sealed or blocked zones; do not multiply it by open-area percentage. The planar formula applies to flat media or a justified thin-wall approximation, not a thick cylindrical wall.

Formula and units

Measured permeability: ΔP = μLQ / (kA). Superficial velocity v = Q/A.

Reference measurement: ΔP = ΔP₀ × (μ/μ₀) × (Q/Q₀).

SI calculation units: Q in m³/s, μ in Pa·s, L in m, A in m², k in m² and ΔP in Pa. 1 bar = 100,000 Pa; 1 mPa·s = 1 cP. Use viscosity at the operating temperature. If only kinematic viscosity ν is known, calculate dynamic viscosity from μ = ρν using consistent SI units.

How to use the result

The permeability method estimates media resistance only. Element support, internal bore, connections, housing and piping may add losses. The reference method retains the measurement boundary of the entered test; use an element-only measurement or independently verified viscous boundary.

For multiple identical parallel elements, total active area may be used only when flow is distributed evenly and each element has the same media properties. A micron rating does not uniquely determine permeability. Verify the estimate against a clean flow–pressure-drop curve and the permitted differential pressure for the actual assembly and flow direction.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate pressure drop from micron rating alone?

No. Mesh weave, layer construction, compaction and flow direction affect permeability. Obtain measured permeability or a suitable clean-element test point.

Does this calculate total filter housing pressure drop?

The permeability method calculates media pressure drop. It excludes housing, support and connection losses. Reference scaling is valid only for the same boundary with confirmed linear viscous losses.

Can I use it for gas or a clogged filter?

No. Gas compressibility, inertial flow, solids loading and non-Newtonian behavior need an appropriate model or measured curves.

Is this the maximum pressure the filter can withstand?

No. Operating line pressure and allowable element differential pressure are different specifications. Use the approved assembly rating and project-specific cleaning or replacement criteria.
