Sintered Metal Porosity Calculator

Estimate total porosity from net media mass, external dimensions and solid alloy density. Use titanium sintered felt, stainless steel sintered felt or multilayer sintered mesh data, or reverse-calculate target mass and thickness.

Calculator inputs

Enter the solid alloy density for your material. Titanium felt, stainless steel felt and multilayer sintered mesh can be evaluated using their own density and net dimensions. Density is not inferred from material name or filtration grade.

Example values illustrate the calculation. They are not product specifications.

Results

Enter your inputs, then select Calculate.

Formula and measurement basis

Single alloy: total porosity = [1 − m / (ρ × V)] × 100%.
Mixed alloys: solid volume = Σ(mᵢ / ρᵢ), then total porosity = [1 − solid volume / V] × 100%.
Target mass = ρ × V × (1 − ε).
Required thickness = solid volume / [planar area × (1 − ε)].

Here ε is the target porosity fraction, ρ is the solid metal density, m is net media mass, and V is external media volume. Sheet, disc and annular-disc volume is planar media area × thickness. Mass per area uses that planar area, not internal fibre surface area or unfolded cartridge area.

The result is theoretical total void fraction based on mass, density and external dimensions. It does not distinguish open, closed or interconnected pores. It does not give surface open area, micron rating, permeability or dirt holding capacity. Use thickness and mass measured in the same material condition.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate multilayer sintered mesh porosity?

Yes. For layers made from the same alloy, use total net media mass and that alloy's solid density. For different alloys, use each component's known mass and density. Use the external thickness of the sintered laminate.

Why do I get an invalid mass or density message?

A net mass greater than the equivalent fully solid metal mass would produce negative porosity. Check units, thickness, alloy density and whether fittings were included.

Can target porosity guarantee a product's thickness?

The reverse result is a geometric mass–volume estimate. Manufacturing compression, sintering shrinkage, thickness variation and material tolerances still require measurement.
