Metal Tube Weight Calculator

Calculate circular, square or rectangular tube cross-sectional area, weight per length and total weight, with optional perforated-area correction.

Quick definition: tube weight equals metal cross-sectional area × length × density. Perforated tube weight is a theoretical estimate because unperforated margins, seams and end zones retain additional metal.

How to use the tube weight calculator

Select the profile

Choose round or rectangular tube and enter outside dimensions plus nominal wall thickness.

Choose density

Select a material or click a reference density to copy it into the custom density field.

Verify perforated parts

Use open area only for preliminary weight reduction; confirm margins, seams and unperforated ends on the drawing.

Formula and limitations

Round tube metal area is the outer circle minus the inner circle. Rectangular tube area is the outer rectangle minus the inner rectangle.

Weight per metre equals cross-sectional area converted to m² multiplied by material density.

The optional perforation reduction assumes the entered open area applies uniformly across the complete tube. Real perforated tubes usually retain solid weld seams, end zones and margins.

The calculation does not include coating, fittings, end caps, flanges, internal supports or weld metal.

Frequently asked questions

How is metal tube weight calculated?

Subtract the inner cross-sectional area from the outer area, multiply by length and material density.

Can this calculate pipe weight?

Yes, when the pipe outside diameter and actual wall thickness are known. Nominal pipe size alone is not sufficient.

Can it calculate perforated tube weight?

It provides a preliminary estimate using open area. Actual weight should include solid margins, seams and end zones.

Does density change by alloy?

Yes. Stainless steel, nickel, titanium, copper and aluminum have different densities; certified alloy data is preferred for critical work.

Can I use the result for freight?

Use it for planning, then confirm shipment weight from finished parts or production records.
