Mesh count alone is insufficient. Use the finished wire diameter and the correct count per inch or centimetre.
Engineering Tool · Woven Wire Mesh
Estimate woven wire mesh weight per square metre and total sheet or roll weight from mesh count, wire diameter, material density, dimensions and crimp allowance.
Quick definition: theoretical mesh weight is the metal volume of both wire directions multiplied by density; actual weight changes with weaving crimp, wire tolerance and edge condition.
For square plain or twill woven wire mesh.
Theoretical values before manufacturing tolerance.
kg/m² = 2 × wires per metre × wire cross-section × density × (1 + crimp %)Mesh count alone is insufficient. Use the finished wire diameter and the correct count per inch or centimetre.
Choose the alloy family or enter the density stated on the material certificate for a closer estimate.
For orders and freight, verify an approved sample because crimp, tolerance and trimmed edges affect actual mass.
The calculator treats the mesh as two perpendicular wire systems. Wire count per metre is converted from mesh count; each wire uses a circular cross-section of πd²/4.
Crimp allowance increases the straight-line wire length to approximate the over-and-under weaving path.
This method suits square plain or twill weave. It is not suitable for Dutch weave, reverse Dutch weave, multi-ply sintered mesh, knitted wire mesh, expanded metal or welded mesh.
For Dutch weave, warp and weft counts, diameters and packing geometry must be calculated separately.
| Method | Inputs | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh × d² ÷ 2 | Mesh, diameter | Fast steel estimate | Assumes a fixed density and coefficient |
| Density-based formula | Mesh, diameter, density | Works across materials | Still needs crimp adjustment |
| Sample weighing | Known area and scale | Includes real construction | Requires a representative sample |
Calculate the total length of warp and weft wires per square metre, multiply by circular wire cross-section and material density, then apply any crimp allowance.
Wire mass changes with the square of diameter. A small diameter difference can materially change the estimated weight.
No. Clear aperture is pitch minus wire diameter, so two meshes with the same count can have different openings and weights.
Use measured production data when available. A small preliminary allowance may be used for square woven mesh, but the real value depends on weave and wire stiffness.
No. Dutch weaves use different warp and weft diameters, counts and packed openings, requiring a separate construction-specific calculation.
Use it for planning only. Confirm final order and freight weight with production specifications or a measured sample.
