Coated Wire Mesh Mass Add-On Calculator

Calculate coating mass increase from paired bare/coated sample weights, then scale to the projected area of comparable mesh.

Use the same dry sample before and after coating, or validated matched specimens. The result includes all coating mass on both sides and wires divided by projected sheet area; it is not mass per actual wire surface area or per single face.

Formula

Add-on q = (coated mass − bare mass)/projected area. Estimated added mass = q × target area. Target area = desired added mass/q. Estimated substrate and coated total masses assume the same bare-mesh mass per projected area.

Frequently asked questions

Can this calculate coating thickness?

No. Actual wire surface area, coating distribution, density and geometry would be required. Projected area is not coated surface area.

Is the result for one side?

No. It includes the entire measured mass increase, including coating on both faces and around wires, normalized by one projected sheet area.

Can I compare different mesh counts or wire diameters?

Do not transfer the measured add-on without validation. Different substrate geometry and coating processes can change mass per projected area.

What if the coated mass is lower?

The calculator rejects the comparison. Check specimen identity, drying, weighing uncertainty and substrate loss before assigning a coating mass.

Does this demonstrate adhesion or coating quality?

No. Weighing does not establish adhesion, coverage, curing or corrosion resistance. Use the relevant inspection and test evidence separately.

Does this include packaging or scrap?

No. Exclude packaging, supports and unrelated added components. Gross material consumption requires a separate production calculation.
