Metal Wire Weight & Length Calculator
Calculate net weight from wire diameter and length, or reverse the calculation to estimate wire length from net mass.
For solid, uniform, circular metal wire only. Reference densities are approximate; exclude spool and packaging mass.

Calculated results
For the entered geometry and conditions.
Calculation basis
A = πd²/4; linear mass λ = ρA; m = λL; L = m/λ.
Use actual metal diameter. Results exclude coatings, spools and packaging.
Worked example and mesh calculations
A 1 mm solid round wire with entered density 8,000 kg/m³ weighs 0.0062831853 kg/m. A length of 100 m weighs approximately 0.62831853 kg. Reversing with that net mass returns 100 m.
For woven sheets and rolls, use the wire mesh weight calculator. Review woven mesh materials and provide the actual alloy, diameter and tolerances for production.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate round metal wire weight?
Multiply the circular wire cross-section by actual wire length and solid material density. Cross-section is pi times diameter squared divided by four.
Can I calculate length from wire weight?
Yes. Divide net wire mass by mass per unit length. The mass must exclude spools, packaging and other non-wire components.
Can this tool calculate woven wire mesh weight?
Use the separate wire mesh weight calculator for woven mesh. This tool calculates one solid circular wire, not mesh count, weaving crimp or sheet area.
Does it apply to stranded, hollow or flattened wire?
No. These need their actual metal cross-section or a component calculation. Do not use an outside diameter as a solid equivalent for stranded or hollow wire.
Which density should I enter?
Use the density appropriate to the actual alloy and agreed conditions. The material shortcuts are approximate reference values, not certified density for every grade or batch.
Is the result a certified shipping weight?
No. Diameter tolerance, ovality, coatings and actual alloy density affect mass. Confirm measured net mass and add packaging separately for shipment.
Units and verification
Internally calculated in metres and kilograms using geometry and mass balance. NIST unit conversion factors. Confirm actual dimensions, net mass and production conditions before purchasing.
